Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils derived from plants. They are made from volatile, highly concentrated plant extracts, from leaves, bark, roots, seeds resins and flowers. Essential oils are believed by aromatherapists to be able to affect moods and can help alleviate pain.
With an aromatherapy massage we can choose up to five essential oils blended with the most suitable carrier oil, such as sweet almond or grapeseed oil. Aromatherapy massages can also be made more relaxing by using oils such as lavender and frankincense or be aimed more at relieving muscle soreness by using peppermint and eucalyptus.
Aromatherapy oils should not be confused with fragrances or perfumes. Fragrances are often made from chemicals and lack the therapeutic properties of essential oils. Some essential oils, such as tea tree have also demonstrated anti-bacterial qualities.
What to expect
On the first visit, a detailed case history will be taken attaining information of any medical history and presenting symptoms. The client and therapist then discuss the desired outcome required from the treatments. After each treatment, progress is reassessed and changes to the blend are made accordingly.
